What is Customs Clearance ?

Customs clearance is a mandatory process where your shipment is inspected and approved by customs authorities in both the exporting and importing countries.
At times, shipments may undergo random physical examination, which is beyond the control of the Courier Company, Like DHL/UPS and Garudavega

Customs Clearance Overview

When a shipment enters a country, it goes through customs clearance to ensure it complies with local import laws. This process involves two possible levels:

1. General Clearance

This is the standard process for most shipments.

  • Documents are verified electronically (invoice, KYC, permits, etc.)
  • Shipment is not opened or physically checked
  • If all documents are in order and no red flags are raised, clearance is granted quickly
  • Duties and taxes (if any) are assessed based on the declared value and HS code

2. Physical Examination

This is a random or risk-based inspection triggered by customs.

  • Customs opens the package to verify contents match the declaration
  • Occurs when items are flagged due to:
    • Suspicion or incorrect description
    • High-value goods
    • Prohibited or restricted items
    • Country-specific regulations
  • Delays are common in such cases
  • Neither the courier nor the sender can prevent or influence this process

Important Notes:

  • Physical examination is entirely under customs control
  • Even properly declared personal shipments may be inspected
  • Clearance timelines may extend based on customs workload or documentation issues
